Holy Cow - It Started...Then Another One Broke

So after Daniel got home from his Army training we all started to get back into the Jeep. I finished assembling the engine and just needed an extra set or two of hands. It took Daniel, Alan and I to get that crazy engine in. I spent a few more days getting all the electrical and fuel systems hooked up and to be very honest...I kind of worried what might become of the new engine...and my new garage and house...the first time I turned the key. Anyway, to make a long story short, and after a few minor adjustments, you can see who well things went by looking at the photo.

The night before we started the engine the other shoe dropped. Daniel was on his way to Cedar City for what he describes as a "hot date" when all of the sudden he hears loud noises, banging, and lots of smoke. He pulled over on I-15 and looked under the car - seeing flames he decided it was best to call 911.

Again, to make a long, but pretty funny, story short the flames went out pretty quick and were caused by oil spraying on the hot headers. A large oil spill could be seen behind him and after getting help from Mom the car was towed back to the house. The next morning Alan was stopping by to help finish the Jeep so we climbed underneath to see how bad things really were. Once again you can tell by the photos how things went that morning.

For the non-mechanical who might be reading. You're looking at a hole the size of a cantaloupe in the bottom of the of the oil pan. The black junk inside is oil, the green stuff in antifreeze...it's NEVER a good think when you see antifreeze INSIDE the oil pan. That's a sure sign that the interior of the engine is either cracked or missing a piece.

The round thing you see in the second photo is the front of the crankshaft. Not only are you not supposed to be able to see it, you're also not supposed to see those ugly gouges in it. AND there is supposed to be a connecting rod and piston attached to it. Well...we're guessing that part of that metal is somewhere out on I-15 and was probably last seen shooting through the bottom of that oil pan at a high rate of speed.

We all had to just laugh at the odd timing of the whole thing. Daniel is lost without his Blazer but he's getting a brand new engine...6 months before his mission.

Such a sad, sad looking garage. All those white cars, all in a state of repair - or disrepair as the case may be. Oh, there's nothing wrong with the Camry...yet. It ain't much to look at, but I guess it runs better than the Blazer!
